MBDC as your Accredited Assessor
In order for your product to be Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM, a manufacturer must work with an Accredited Assessor (also known as Accredited Assessment Body). Accredited Assessors are organizations approved by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute to conduct third-party evaluations of a product and its manufacturing process. These organizations lead and manage the data collection and assessment process, guide manufacturers in meeting the certification requirements, and submit the summary report to the Institute for approval.
As the originator of the Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM program and assessment methodology, MBDC has the most experience in working throughout the supply chain to collect formulations, evaluating product and manufacturing data to meet the requirements, and supporting clients through the process. In addition, we can offer Cradle to Cradle® consulting services to help your solve sustainability challenges and optimize your product to higher levels.

Both pricing and timing for the certification process depend on complexity of the product, depth of the supply chain, and the level of certification being pursued. Cost for MBDC’s services range from $7,500 to $75,000+, and length of the certification process may range from 2-6+ months.
1. Inquiry & Application
a. Review certification criteria and application documents
b. Fill out the Applicant Survey and Material Appendix. If filling out these documents involves sharing proprietary information, you may also fill out the Mutual Nondisclosure Agreement.
c. Send completed documents to MBDC (firstname.lastname@example.org) for review
d. Once documents are received, a MBDC representative can review with you the process for getting a product certified and provide an estimate of cost and time to work with MBDC as a service provider for the Cradle to Cradle Certified program.
2. Product Screen
Based on applicant interviews, completed forms, and publicly available information about the product, MBDC provides a preliminary assessment of how a product may fare in the program and recommends a certification level to pursue.
3. Product Inventory & Assessment
The bulk of the certification process involves partnering with the product manufacture on data collection and product assessment. This step typically takes 2-6+ months depending on the complexity of the product and its supply chain.
a. MBDC assigns a project manager to serve as a guide through the certification process.
b. MBDC and applicant work together to collect all the data required for certification. The Certification Packet must be completed with all necessary information included.
c. MBDC conducts a Site Visit to the manufacturing facility of final assembly.
4. Certification Summary Report
MBDC will submit a Certification Report and supporting documentation to the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute for review.
5. Certification Issuance
a. Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute will review the Certification Packet and supporting documentation.
b. If all criteria are met, the Institute will issue the certificate at the appropriate level.
6. Certification Renewal
Under Version 3 of the program, certification is valid for two calendar years from the certification date and must be renewed biennally.
a. A few months prior to certification renewal date, you will receive a letter of notification and a renewal packet from MBDC.
b. Review the Certification Renewal Packet and collect any new information related to product formulation or manufacturing process. Work with MBDC to review data and evaluate any changes in the product formulation or manufacturing process.
c. Once the Certification Renewal Packet is complete, MBDC will send the packet and supporting documentation to the Institute for review.
